What is convalescent care?
Convalescent care is short-term support provided in a care home or nursing home to help individuals recover after a hospital stay, a severe illness, or major surgery. The goal is to provide a safe space with professional support until the person is well enough to return home independently.
How does convalescent care work?
After a major operation (such as a hip replacement) or a severe medical event (like a stroke or severe infection), a person may be medically fit to leave the hospital—but not physically strong enough to go straight back to living alone.
In these situations, a short-term stay in a care home provides the perfect transition. Staff handle everything from cooking and cleaning to personal care, medication management, and mobility support, allowing the resident to focus entirely on resting and regaining their strength.
Who needs convalescent care?
Convalescent care is generally recommended for people who:
- Have just been discharged from hospital after major surgery (e.g. orthopaedic, cardiac) and need supervised recovery
- Are recovering from a severe illness (e.g. pneumonia) and are suffering from extreme fatigue
- Require intensive physiotherapy or rehabilitation support before going home
- Live alone and do not have family nearby who can provide 24/7 post-operative support
Convalescent Care vs Respite Care: What's the difference?
While both are types of short-term care home stays, their purposes differ:
- Convalescent care is for someone recovering from a specific medical event or surgery with the explicit goal of rehabilitation and returning home.
- Respite care is generally planned to give a family carer a temporary break from their caring duties, or to trial a care home before a permanent move. Assessment of recovery is not the primary goal.
What is the cost of convalescent care?
Because convalescent stays are short-term and often require high levels of initial support, care homes typically charge a weekly rate similar to—or slightly higher than—their standard residential or nursing fee.
In the UK, expect to pay around £1,000–£1,300 per week in a residential home, or £1,200–£1,500+ per week if nursing care or intensive in-house physiotherapy is required.
Is funded convalescent care available?
In some cases, the NHS provides free short-term convalescent care (often called intermediate care or reablement care). This is entirely free for up to 6 weeks, arranged by the hospital discharge team to prevent a delayed discharge. However, it is heavily means- and needs-tested, and availability heavily depends on local NHS capacity.
If intermediate care is not granted, or you wish to choose a specific private care home with premium facilities for recovery, you will usually need to self-fund the stay.
